Spock withdraws his hand from the flame
and looks upon it, notices how it
casts both light and shadow upon the room.
An air current causes a small
hanging mirror to reflect the light of
the candle into a dark corner,
illuminating it and making it, for a moment,
a thing of beauty. His mate is
like that mirror, doing his best to reflect
the light of hope, truth,
understanding and compassion into the dark
places of the universe and the
black places in the hearts of men. Something
he does in spite of being
haunted by shadows and doubts.
