I saw Spock today, gold is
not his color.
He stood stoic over a
hover-stretcher bearing a dark-haired woman. Yeah, he looked all cool, but I
could still read him. His right hand was clutching the side of the stretcher so
hard that his knuckles were white and the tri-luminum was buckling. His left
hand was in constant contact with
the patient. Her good hand rested on his right arm as she spoke softly to him.
Her cool blue eyes were locked on his warm brown eyes. They were saying their
private good-byes in
the busy shuttle bay of the Enterprise.
Our medi-vac shuttle from the
USS McIntyre was there to pick up the survivors of the Cletus III massacre. The
Klingons didn’t leave much but, God knows, Dr. Piper did his best with what was
left. Now it was our turn to take these folks for reconstruction and
rehabilitation.
Captain Christopher Pike was
talking to our senior doctor, Lt Commander Richard Dell. “Take good care of
Number One, okay.” Dr. Dell looked puzzled. Pike went on, “My executive
officer, Commander Margot Riker. We wouldn’t
be here if it weren’t for her actions down there.” The captain
pointed to the only female
patient, Spock’s special friend.
Dell cracked a now-I-get-it
grin. “Oh, yeah. She’s one hell of a gal.”
Spock lifted his head glaring
phaser beams at Dell. I noticed Dickey was under an optical barrage from all
the Enterprise crew.
“One hell of a hero.” Pike
corrected him.
Dickey had the grace to
blush. He shouted “Load’em up people! We got heroes to heal.”
Commander Riker was the last
patient loaded. Spock tried to come aboard with her. Pike stopped him and
gently lead the Vulcan away.
Later as I watched Ms. Riker
sleep, I tried to sort out my feelings. She had been beautiful, judging by her
personnel jacket. I sighed reconstructive surgery was doing great things there
days, maybe….
Even if Ms. Riker got her
looks back and her bio-cybernetic limbs were flawless; she’d never be able to
come back to the Enterprise. She’d never come back to Spock. Poor Spock.
I felt an electric zing to my
heart when I saw him again after all these years. And a hollow aching feeling,
but come to
think about, that was all -- just hollow and achy. It used to be a vast cavern
of roiling,
boiling acid.
I did feel jealous. I’m not proud of that. I have no claim on
him
and she’s…
Shit! Enough introspection.
I saw my first real love
again today. He didn’t even look at me and I’m fine.
